Soil Analysis

Learn the steps for collecting and analysing soil samples.

Step 1:

Divide the land into parcels with similar characteristics.

Step 2:

Walk the parcel in a zig-zag.

Step 3:

Clear weeds, stones and surface debris before taking the sub-sample.

Step 4:

Take 15-20 sub-samples from each parcel, at the rooting depth of the crop. Each parcel must have its own sample.

• 15-20 sub-samples → 1 soil sample
• Each soil sample may represent no more than 5 ha.

Recommended depth:

• Pasture: 0 -10 cm;
• Other annual crops: 0 – 20 cm;
• Trees and shrubs: 0 – 50 cm.

Equipment:

• Bucket;
• Hoe and spade (or a soil auger);
• Label;
• Plastic bag (or similar).

Step 5:

Combine the sub-samples in the bucket and mix thoroughly.

Step 6:

Transfer 500 g of soil into the bag.

Step 7:

Label the bag twice, inside and outside.

Step 8:

Send it to the laboratory to have the parameters determined.
